By the late 1800s, Valentine cards were completely machine-made. The first of many saleable valentine greeting cards produced in the US was created in the 1840s. John Calcott Horsley was the architect of the first Christmas card, and Louis Prang has come to be known as the father of Christmas greetings. He migrated from Germany and started a small-scale lithographic unit close to Boston in the 1850s, and is generally responsible for starting the production of greeting cards in The United States. His lithographic techniques, including color, had been so perfected that he had no competition from artists and craftsmen. During the 1870s, he came up with exclusive editions of Christmas greetings, which were an instant hit in Britain.
So, lets start with what is a greeting card. Originally, greeting cards derive from postcards ( which are single sided without the fold ) and are an illustrated, folded card usually featuring a message of greeting or other sentiment. They can be either printed or handmade. Now, with the advent of Internet though, virtual greetings cards have evolved which doesnot fit into the above-mentioned definition.
With the expense of mailing a greeting card continually rising, I think this type of card is going to keep growing by leaps and bounds. Not only that, it gives me a few more hours to not miss someones birthday because it only takes a minute to create and send one. With all of the different types of greeting cards that are available, its hard to top the handmade greeting cards if you are looking for something really personal. There is a lot of care, attention and time that goes into creating a greeting card. What could be better than sending someone you care about a homemade card, especially if it is one the you made. I know that some of my all time favorite cards are ones that my son made for me when he was in grade school.
When I receive a greeting card I feel important because I know someone is thinking of me. I usually hold on to the card for a few days and display it so I may look at it. Then I have to make the decision whether to discard or keep the card. Like many of us who have limited storage space, I have to be selective about what I keep. Unfortunately, most times I find myself throwing out the greeting card. I usually have negative feelings about having to do this. The thoughtful card sender spent time looking for the right card, and many times the card is very attractive and I hate to just throw it out. An average person receives 20 greeting cards per year and I bet many have similar feelings about discarding attractive greeting cards.
