Sending greetings is a traditional method to express love and feelings of affection towards friends, family members and other loved ones. Cards impact the receiver as these carry personal messages, even though these take some time to reach the receiver. Emails and e-cards are faster but still do not touch the heart like a common printed greeting card does.
When I receive a greeting card I feel important because I know someone is thinking of me. I usually hold on to the card for a few days and display it so I may look at it. Then I have to make the decision whether to discard or keep the card. Like many of us who have limited storage space, I have to be selective about what I keep. Unfortunately, most times I find myself throwing out the greeting card. I usually have negative feelings about having to do this. The thoughtful card sender spent time looking for the right card, and many times the card is very attractive and I hate to just throw it out. An average person receives 20 greeting cards per year and I bet many have similar feelings about discarding attractive greeting cards.
I havent had the privilege of seeing even a picture of it, but there is a Valentine card made in the 1400s that is on display in a British Museum. The first Christmas Card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in 1843 where he had John Calcott Horsley paint a card for him centering around the feeding and clothing of the poor. Although he wasnt the first, Louis Prang is known as the Father of the American Christmas Card because prior to that we imported our greeting cards from England. Greeting cards were original fairly expensive because they were a handmade and hand delivered gift so they were mainly enjoyed and shared by the wealthy. By about the 1850s they became more affordable because of the advances in printing and postage rates were very reasonable.
So far weve discussed very happy and joyous occasions that you can offer card as a congratulations to and thank you too, however, there are somewhat sad reasons to give cards as well. If there is a death in the family, a condolence card is given to show your support and love for the person suffering the loss. Other fairly sad are the I Miss You or Going Away which are either when someone is leaving a workplace or city and are offered by friends and family or co-workers. These are usually very emotional times and the cards are heartfelt and sincere, especially when its most difficult to find the words to describe your feelings.
