So, lets start with what is a greeting card. Originally, greeting cards derive from postcards ( which are single sided without the fold ) and are an illustrated, folded card usually featuring a message of greeting or other sentiment. They can be either printed or handmade. Now, with the advent of Internet though, virtual greetings cards have evolved which doesnot fit into the above-mentioned definition.
You, your family and friends will eliminate those negative feelings associated with throwing out cards and create a common bond through participation in this new tradition. I personally know a family who passes a gag birthday gift with an attached card around to each family member as their birthday comes up. Talk about a reusable gift and card. There are many ways that we keep in touch with our family and friends, such as e-mail, text messaging and phone calls. But the majority of people in the US say that they prefer receiving a greeting card because it makes them feel special.
The ritual of sending greeting cards can be traced to the early Chinese, who exchanged goodwill messages to bring in each New Year, and to the ancient Egyptians, who communicated their good wishes on papyrus scrolls. However, greeting cards have only been a part of the tradition of many cultures for about two centuries or a little more, to be precise. The oldest identified greeting card is a Valentines card made in the 1400s, which can be found in a museum in London. It was during the 19th century that greeting cards gained real status. It was during the latter part of this century that cards got incorporated into mainstream culture, so that most of the population could actually afford it. It was around that time that cheap printing came into being and a new trade for printers and artists was born. Soon after, post offices were inundated with millions (literally) of letters during the Christmas week alone. Keeping in line with this new trend were Easter, Halloween and Thanksgiving, which gained momentum as suitable occasions for card-giving.
So far weve discussed very happy and joyous occasions that you can offer card as a congratulations to and thank you too, however, there are somewhat sad reasons to give cards as well. If there is a death in the family, a condolence card is given to show your support and love for the person suffering the loss. Other fairly sad are the I Miss You or Going Away which are either when someone is leaving a workplace or city and are offered by friends and family or co-workers. These are usually very emotional times and the cards are heartfelt and sincere, especially when its most difficult to find the words to describe your feelings.
