According to a dictionary, a greeting card is an illustrated and folded card featuring an expression of friendship and/or other sentiment. That description doesnt really show the thought or feeling behind giving or receiving a card. According to what I have found, the history of greeting cards goes back a long ways. The ancient Chinese exchanged messages of good will to celebrate their New Year and in early Egypt they sent greetings on papyrus scrolls. Papyrus scrolls were made from the Pith or the center of the Papyrus plant which use to be abundant in the Nile Delta of Egypt. The Germans were known to have printed New Years greetings from woodcuts as early as the 1400.
I would definitely start your business online. This is the best way to test your products and find your market without the massive upfront costs associated with opening a store. Just recently one of the largest greeting card stores in Delaware, Coccia is shutting its doors after 35 years in the business. Back in February 2010, market research firm Mintel reported that the $11 billion greeting card business was being bombarded by new online competition. Its been staving off threats by introducing creative new cards -- think of the ones with music built-in, or others that allow purchasers to record a personal greeting. But the industry has been merely treading water for a couple of years now after strong growth earlier this decade, the report said.
What is the simplest, most effective way to get a message out to people again and again? Using custom greeting cards can let you present whatever message you choose, in an attractive and memorable way. What advantages do custom greeting cards have over other kinds of communication? They give people a reason to save and reread: unlike a phone call, an email, or a generic greeting card, custom greeting cards give people something to save, revisit, and share. If you can create a unique message for your cards, you can give people a joke to tell, a picture to share, and a memorable greeting. They arent ephemeral like a phone call, and unlike an email someone cant just file them away - the only right way to treat a well-considered card is to display it. Displaying custom greeting cards in a home or office is both a way to remind oneself about the card, and to show it off to others. Giving your friends the chance to do that is always a good plan.
When I receive a greeting card I feel important because I know someone is thinking of me. I usually hold on to the card for a few days and display it so I may look at it. Then I have to make the decision whether to discard or keep the card. Like many of us who have limited storage space, I have to be selective about what I keep. Unfortunately, most times I find myself throwing out the greeting card. I usually have negative feelings about having to do this. The thoughtful card sender spent time looking for the right card, and many times the card is very attractive and I hate to just throw it out. An average person receives 20 greeting cards per year and I bet many have similar feelings about discarding attractive greeting cards.
