Last Christmas was an excellent year for receiving Christmas cards. It seems that the Hallmark cards and American Greeting cards get more elegant each year, and this year I had a bunch of them. At the end of the season I took them all down from the display and looked at them one more time. With an achy heart I placed them in the trash can and thought about how many landfills are lined with a thick layer of discarded cards from thoughtful family and friends. Virtually all of them were in excellent condition other than the added writing from the sender. Well, something inside me clicked and I got to thinking. Shouldnt someone who is important to me receive a greeting card, then be able to resend the card to someone else who is important to them? Making greeting cards reusable turns greeting card recipients into greeting card senders.
As mentioned above, technology has changed the way we give and receive greetings. From the simple form of a paper greeting card, folded in two with a simple message they have evolved all the way to the online e- cards. However, if you still want to go classic and purchase the paper greeting card you still have many choices. From sizes and shapes all the way to the very creative pop up greetings as well as the musical or recorded messages. The musical or record messages are extra amusing as either they come with a pre-recorded song to go along with the theme of the card that starts to play as soon as you open it, or you can actually record your own message instead of write it somewhere on the card.
What equipment do I need for a home greeting card business? You will need a computer, printer, camera or scanner, paper stock and envelopes, inventory and business software to run the company, invoice stores or clients, make business cards and promotional material What are some of the legal issues I need to be aware of when starting a greeting card business? Depending on where you live and what the laws are for your area, you may need to register your business and copyright your products and names used. You should contact your local government business office or do some research online to ensure that you know the necessary legal steps required in your area.
By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Years greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s. However, by the 1850s, the greeting card had been transformed from a relatively expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a popular and affordable means of personal communication, due largely to advances in printing and mechanization. This trend continued, fuelled by new trends like Christmas cards, the first of which appeared in published form in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances. Technical developments like color lithography in 1930 propelled the manufactured greeting card industry forward.
